CHENNAI: With 1,559 new cases reported in TN, the fall in fresh cases continued on Thursday, though 17 districts reported an increase compared to the Wednesday tally. The sharpest increase was seen in Coimbatore district, which shares borders with Kerala, with new cases rising from 181 on Wednesday to 216 on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the 26 deaths reported on Thursday took the toll to 34,814. At the end of the day, after discharging 1,816 patients, the state had 18,069 people undergoing treatment for the viral infection.
On Thursday, the public health department asked all districts bordering Kerala to maintain strict vigil and encourage 100% vaccination of persons travelling across the state. The districts were also asked to identify areas with higher positivity rate within its jurisdiction for micro containment measures and contact tracing. Fresh cases reported in other border districts such as Kanyakumari and Tenkasi were nearly the same as Wednesday, while Theni reported a fall from 14 cases on Wednesday to 8 on Thursday.
After Coimbatore, the most new cases were reported in Chennai (175) and Erode
(115). While Chennai reported an increase from 170 new cases on Wednesday, Erode reported a decline from 130 cases. Chengalpet, which followed Erode, reported 113 cases – an increase from 90 cases on Wednesday. Chengalpet saw the sharpest increase in fresh cases after Coimbatore.
Of the 26 deaths reported on Thursday, Coimbatore, Erode, Thanjavur and Kancheepuram accounted for three each. Eight districts reported one death each and 23 reported zero deaths.
