Coffee, cake and cats: Paw-some new cat cafe opens in Durham city

Customers visiting a new County Durham cafe can enjoy their coffee and cake surrounded by five fluffy felines.

Sarah Zong, 31, has opened The Pawsome Cat Cafe on North Road in Durham city, where people can enjoy the company of five furry feline friends.

The former Newcastle University student also owns Catpawcino on Newcastle’s Quayside, which opened in 2015.

She said: “We had the shop before lockdown in March and we thought we’d be able to open in May but because of the lockdown we couldn’t do anything.

“The moment has finally arrived and everything is absolutely fine.

“It is quite exciting to meet customers and open the shop.

“We had a soft opening to make sure everything was okay and it has been quite popular.

“I think Durham is a really good city and liked the idea of opening a cat cafe here.”

At the moment, Sarah said booking is best to ensure customers are not disappointed.

Sarah, who originally comes from Lanzhou in China, added: “We do take walk-ins but I would recommend booking to avoid disappointment.

“When you come to the cafe there are two doors and we ask people to sanitise their hands and take off their shoes.

“We have five cats at the moment as we want it to feel comfortable and safe.

“We are planning to work with a Durham charity and get some rescue cats.”
