Aussie pop star Cody Simpson has shared a “serious” health update with fans that has halted the roll out of his new album Baby Blue, which marks his return to the music industry after a six-year hiatus.
Simpson took to social media on Tuesday to reveal that he had suffered a “serious hemorrhage” on one of his vocal chords, saying the injury occurred “due to [his] overzealousness in the studio singing through a sinus infection” he “didn’t know” he had.
The singer, who revealed the news alongside a pic of himself near a medical machine, said he discovered the hemorrhage over a month ago, and was originally going to “keep this private” but thought it was time to “share what I’ve been going through”.
“I assumed it was just fatigue and kept showing up to the studio until one day I could no longer sing,” Simpson wrote.
As a result of the injury, which forced him into vocal rest, Simpson said he had to cancel press appearances for the promotion of Baby Blue, as well as pause the finishing touches of the upcoming album.
“I’ve now been on and off vocal rest for weeks, cancelling TV and radio performances for Baby Blue in the process. This has also affected my ability to complete the album and polish up the next singles,” Simpson explained.
Moving forward, the singer said he will continue vocal rest for another two weeks to avoid a much more taxing vocal surgery, and will stick to “writing strictly as a lyricist on mute with my collaborators” while in the studio.
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” he wrote.
Simpson — who said he wants to bring people on the journey of his injury and recovery — received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow celebs in the comments section.
Jack Johnson, one half of the pop duo Jack & Jack, said he was “sending prayers”, while Hunter Moreno, photographer and fiancé of The Hunting Wives’ Brittany Snow, said Simpson’s injury is “all part of the story” and that he “can’t wait to hear what’s next”.
A bunch of fans also sent their well-wishes and said they would “love to hear some you have already finished” of Simpson’s album.
In an interview with PEDESTRIAN.TV earlier this year, Simpson teased that his new album — which will end his musical hiatus after his foray into competitive swimming — would be an “accumulation of everything I’ve done musically and stylistically”.
“Those who love the early pop stuff, those who loved my singer-songwriter era, I’m bringing them all along for the journey,” Simpson said.
