Cody Barton looking to veterans Bobby Wagner, K.J. Wright as mentors

Seahawks rookie linebacker Cody Barton has had one of the most impressive starts to training camp of any player on Seattle’s roster. Selected in the third round of April’s draft, Barton is making a push to have an impact his first season, and he’s looking to two very seasoned veterans for guidance.

“I’d say their focus,” Barton said Tuesday of Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright. “You can just tell, looking into their eyes and tell how focused they are, how much they put into ball, that’s everything to them. That’s why Bobby is an eight-year guy, and K.J. is a nine-year guy, it pays off, the focus they have and love for the game.”

The Seahawks are experimenting with the rookie, moving Barton around and testing his comfort level. He even took reps with the first team at SAM linebacker this week. His versatility is what made him such an intriguing pick for Seattle. And he’s making the most of the mentoring this summer.

“Every play, every time I came off he’s telling me something,” Barton said of Wagner. “Or every time I’m coming off and he’s not telling me something, I’m going to go up to him and ask for him to tell me something. Him and K.J., they’ve helped me out a ton.

“I’ve learned, I probably learned more here in these past few weeks than I have my life in football, so that’s awesome.”
