Code of conduct issued for buskers to avoid noise and nuisance

Buskers and street performers have been ordered to sign up to a new code of conduct to avoid noise and nuisance.

Trafford council has introduced the code following a consultation last year, in an attempt to ‘ensure a balance between the needs of musicians, residents and businesses’ in Altrincham town centre.

The standards are already in operation and include instructions for acts to perform at a reasonable volume, not cause obstruction, and never to use amplified sound, drums or street furniture.

As part of the code, buskers have also be asked to maintain a 50 metre gap between one another, to be prepared to change location should they impact on people in the area, and to apply for a street collection licence if they are performing for charity.

A spokesperson for Trafford council said: “We want to ensure that the centre of Altrincham is a thriving, prosperous and secure environment for everyone who lives, visits or works around the town.

“Buskers can really enhance the atmosphere of a town centre but we want to make sure they don’t have a negative impact on the surrounding area.

“Therefore, we are asking buskers to abide by the new code to ensure that live music can continue to be part of the life of the town, without interfering with other users of the town centre.”

The code will operate between April 1 and September 30 2022, after which its operation is set to be reviewed.

Last year, during the consultation, the council said it recognises that buskers can be an important part of the culture of the town but that they should not have a negative impact on their surrounding area by causing a nuisance or interfering with the running of businesses.
