Cod 'has it's chips' as fish favourite off the menu due to climate change

North Sea cod could be off the menu as stocks of the fish plummet again.

Experts warn the crisis may be linked to climate change.

The Marine Stewardship Council will strip the cod’s approval rating as sustainable food in a bid to raise numbers.

Stock had dwindled by 80 per cent due to decades of overfishing.

But in 2017 the MSC labelled it sustainable for the first time in 20 years after a recovery.

But stocks have fallen to dangerous levels again.

The MSC’s Erin Priddle said: “The decline is worrying.

“Changes in the marine environment are accelerating under climate-related impacts and will continue to present challenges for achieving sustainable fisheries.”

The organisation urged shoppers to buy cod from other parts of the world, such as Iceland, Norway or Russia.

Greenpeace said: “Industrial overfishing has driven stocks of cod in the North Sea to the point of collapse again.”
