Coco Gauff vs Emma Raducanu LIVE!
Emma Raducanu was convincingly beaten by Coco Gauff at the Italian Open on Monday, losing 6-1 6-2. It was just the second career meeting between the two, and the American deservedly doubled her lead in the head-to-head.
It appeared after the first point that Raducanu could be in with a chance, as Gauff opted to serve and hit an immediate double fault. She quickly recovered, though, holding serve and breaking Raducanu’s first service game to take a commanding lead in the first set. Raducanu had her moments in the first set, but ultimately fell to a considerable deficit.
The second set followed a different trend. Raducanu held an unproblematic serve in the opening game and managed to stay even through 2-2 before Gauff finally forced an error, taking the lead halfway through the set. The Briton threatened to respond with a break of her own in the very next game, but Gauff rescued the break point and converted, eventually breaking her again and holding serve to confirm the victory. Raducanu on clay
13:33 , Arthur FerridgeIt is no secret that Emma Raducanu does not enjoy playing on clay, but she is starting to find form ahead of next month’s French Open.
At this year’s Madrid Open, she recorded her first outdoor clay win for close to three years.
Speaking after her round of 64 win, she said: “I still don't feel really comfortable [on clay].
"I guess in a way it helps I have to be super focused on every single point, get my feet right and try not to fall over.
"I think I'm slowly finding my feet."
Gauff and Raducanu's past
13:26 , Arthur FerridgeGauff and Raducanu have met just once in their careers - the second round of the 2023 Australian Open. Gauff beat an injury-affected Raducanu on the day 6-3 7-6.
Gauff certainly has the stronger resume, though. She has one Grand Slam title to her name, same as Raducanu, but has been much more consistent throughout her career.
She reached the final of the Madrid Open last month, losing to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.
Around the courts
13:20 , Arthur FerridgeRaducanu vs Gauff will not get underway until Mensik vs Marozsan has reached its conclusion.
For those of us who are keen to watch Raducanu, there is good news. Mensik won the first set 6-4 and is currently on serve in the second, meaning we should be on track for Gauff and Raducanu to get underway at the scheduled 2pm.
Earlier today, Tommy Paul knocked out Tomas Machac, and Peyton Stearns upset Naomi Osaka.
What happened after Raducanu's match yesterday?
13:13 , Arthur FerridgeEmma Raducanu got past Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova 5-7 6-0 6-1 yesterday to reach this stage of the competition, but levelled some pointed comments at her after the fact.
Kudermetova took an eight-minute medical break late in the second set, which Raducanu felt was an attempt to break her momentum. She was leading 5-0 at the time, securing the final game required in short order to force a third set.
“I kind of knew it was to try and throw me off, but I kept my cool,” laughed Raducanu. “I served it out, and then from the third set I was really on it.”
Coco Gauff's route to the round of 16
13:05 , Arthur FerridgeCoco Gauff’s tournament has been much more straightforward than Raducanu’s. Afforded a bye through the early rounds as she came in with a high seed, she has played only twice on the Italian clay so far.
She downed the unseeded Canadian Victoria Mboko, losing the first set 3-6 before battling back 6-2 6-1 to move on.
It was Poland’s Magda Linette in the next round, and a to-the-point 7-5 6-3 win saw the American move forward.
Standard Sport's prediction
12:56 , Arthur FerridgeEmma Raducanu is facing another tough test today, and fatigue may well play a role. She has played one more match than Coco Gauff in this tournament, going to three sets in all but one of those matches. Should today’s match go to three sets, Gauff will surely be feeling fresher.
Gauff has the upper hand both in terms of form and seeding, and will hope to convert that into another win in Rome.
Coco Gauff to win
Raducanu's Italian Open so far
12:50 , Arthur FerridgeIt has been a mixed tournament for Raducanu thus far. She required three sets to beat Australian Maya Joint in the first round.
She had then been due to play Ekaterina Alexandrova in the round of 64, but the Russian pulled out of the tournament with a shoulder issue. Her replacement, lucky loser Jil Teichmann, was then beaten in straight sets.
Raducanu again went the distance in yesterday’s round of 32 tie, beating Veronika Kudermetova 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 and accusing her opponent of gamesmanship after she took an extended medical timeout.
Raducanu excited to face Gauff
12:47 , Arthur FerridgeToday marks just the second ever meeting between Raducanu and Gauff, and the Briton is relishing the opportunity to face one of tennis’ top talents.
