US Open live: Ruthless Sinner thrashes Bublik in 81 minutes to reach quarter-finals

Jannik Sinner continued his US Open defence with a 6-1 6-1 6-1 win over Alexander Bublik - (Getty Images)

Jannik Sinner required just 81 minutes to crush Alexander Bublik 6-1 6-1 6-1 and return to the US Open quarter-finals.

Bublik was the last player to beat Sinner, recording a victory on grass at Halle shortly before Wimbledon, and the World No1 showed no mercy as he destroyed his opponent in the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium, allowing just three games.

Sinner has now won 25 matches in a row at the hard-court grand slams and will play fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, Naomi Osaka returned to a grand slam quarter-final for the first time since 2021 as she swept Coco Gauff aside 6-3 6-2 in the meeting of former US Open champions.

The contest only lasted 64 minutes and it was a horror show for Gauff, who made 33 unforced errors and won just six points against Osaka’s serve.

There is an extremely promising sign for Osaka, however, with the 27-year-old having never lost at a grand slam when she has reached the quarter-final stage.

Amanda Anisimova ‘excited’ by Iga Swiatek rematch after Wimbledon misery

12:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Amanda Anisimova insists she is happy to have another crack at Iga Swiatek as she looks to put her Wimbledon misery firmly behind her.

Seven-and-a-half weeks after the American suffered the worst Wimbledon final defeat in more than a century, failing to win a game against Swiatek, she will take on the Pole again in the quarter-finals of the US Open.

Anisimova has picked herself up impressively, with a 6-0 6-3 victory over Beatriz Haddad Maia on Monday night seeing her reach the last eight at her home grand slam for the first time.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to it,” she said of her clash with Swiatek.

“At this stage of the game, you’re going to play a really tough opponent regardless. So, to be able to have a rematch or to be able to face her again and give myself another chance, I’m really, really happy about that.”

A man who snatched a hat gifted by tennis star Kamil Majchrzak to a young boy at the US Open 2025 has been identified as Polish millionaire Piotr Szczerek.

Majchrzak had just defeated ninth seed Karen Khachanov before the viral incident on Thursday, with a video showing the tennis star signing autographs and then removing his cap for a young boy named Brock.

And Szczerek has now released a lengthy statement apologising for his actions and the “grave mistake” he made at Flushing Meadows.

Novak Djokovic v Taylor Fritz start time: When is US Open quarter-final?

10:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic faces Taylor Fritz in the US Open quarter-finals as the last American man in the singles draw aims to beat the 24-time grand slam champion for the first time.

Fritz, the fourth seed, reached the US Open final last year but has lost all 10 meetings against Djokovic, including a straight-sets quarter-final defeat to the Serbian when he won his last title in 2023.

Djokovic is aiming to win a record 25th grand slam title and played his best tennis of the tournament in dismissing Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets in the fourth round.

Fritz lost to Jannik Sinner in last year’s US Open final and is the only man to reach the quarter-final stage after Ben Shelton retired and Francis Tiafoe and Tommy Paul were knocked out.

Coco Gauff tries to be positive after chastening US Open defeat to Naomi Osaka

08:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Coco Gauff believes better times lie ahead despite a chastening loss to a resurgent Naomi Osaka in the fourth round of the US Open.

This was the most anticipated match of the tournament so far but it lasted only 64 minutes, with Osaka racing to a 6-3 6-2 victory for her biggest grand slam result in more than four years.

While the Japanese star produced a strong performance, losing just six points on serve in the contest, this was a horror show from Gauff in front of her home fans, the American making 33 unforced errors and crashing out in the fourth round for the second year in a row.

Jannik Sinner defends Alexander Bublik after US Open thrashing

07:00 , Jamie Braidwood

“As I said we don't have to forget that he had a five-set match and it finished very late, against Tommy, is a different player. It can happen. This is the sport.

“Some days are good, and some days are not good. Maybe I have a day where things don't work, and then I lose easy. You never know what's happening. It's very unpredictable, the sport.”

Jannik Sinner on facing Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals

06:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti will play their first match since 2023. Sinner has beaten his compatriot twice, including that last win at Monte Carlo.

“It's going to be very interesting to see. It's a bit different when you play the same, or from me being Italian playing against another Italian, they are always a bit different matches. But in the same time, he's an amazing player, very, very talented. He is playing some great tennis.

“He has struggled a bit during the season, but now he finds himself in an amazing form and shape. The pressure is on me. But in the same time most of the times the pressure is a little bit more me than on the opponent, so let's see what's coming.

“I like these challenges. It's great from an Italian point of view to have, for sure, an Italian playing the semis of a grand slam.

“Now these things seem normal, but they are not normal.”

05:10 , Jamie Braidwood

“Who would’ve thought we’d meet again so soon?” laughs Amanda Anisimova when asked about the prospect of playing Iga Swiatek again in the first grand slam after Wimbledon.

Amanda Anisimova sets up Iga Swiatek rematch in US Open quarter-finals

03:37 , Jamie Braidwood

What a one-sided day of tennis we’ve seen on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After Jannik Sinner dropped just three games against Alexander Bublik, Amanda Anisimova drops just three of her own in defeating Beatriz Haddad-Maia.

A very impressive performance and it sets up a quarter-final with Iga Swiatek, which is an immediate rematch of their Wimbledon final.

Swiatek, of course, won that match 6-0 6-0. It can’t go any worse for Anisimova but it will be very different on Arthur Ashe.

“We know each other very well. We had some tough battles. Especially this year. He just said congrats and wished me all the best. He had a very tough match in the last match. GAME, SET AND MATCH! Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-1 6-1 Alexander Bublik

01:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Alexander Bublik almost falls into Jannik Sinner’s arms at the net and says something that makes the World No 1 laugh.

That can’t have been easy for Bublik but he is playing the World No 1, who on this kind of form looks unstoppable.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-1 6-1 Alexander Bublik

01:39 , Jamie Braidwood

As if to sum up one of the most one-sided US Open fourth round matches of all time, Alexander Bublik double-faults when facing match point.

Jannik Sinner extends his winning run at the hard-court grand slams to 25 matches, and that must be one of the quickest.

Just 81 minutes required to beat a player who had won 11 matches in a row before tonight, and who had beat him in their last match!

Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-1 5-1 Alexander Bublik*

01:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Bublik cracks a couple of quickfire returns and lands them for winners! He even gets a look at break point but Sinner saves with the thumping wide serve.

He moves a game away.

*Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-1 4-1 Alexander Bublik

01:29 , Jamie Braidwood

Bublik almost raises the roof as he saves three break points to prevent what surely would have been a bagel set and 6-1 6-1 6-0 defeat.

Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-1 4-0 Alexander Bublik*

01:24 , Jamie Braidwood

Bublik raises his arm and the crowd erupts as he wins the opening point against the Sinner serve.

Sinner allows no more celebration as he again gets up to the short ball to put away the forehand winner.

No mercy.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-1 3-0 Alexander Bublik

01:21 , Jamie Braidwood

A couple of scintillating dashes from Sinner to get up to the Bublik ball and put away a winners, which gives the crowd something to cheer about.

We must be heading to one of the quickest ever US Open wins in the men’s singles.

More head-shaking from Bublik, as if he’s in disbelief that the guy on the other side of the net is even human, as Sinner thumps an ace to hold to love.

6-1 6-1 2-0 in one hour.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-1 1-0 Alexander Bublik

01:13 , Jamie Braidwood

Alexander Bublik hadn’t dropped serve once through his first three wins at the US Open.

He’s now been broken six times out of eight times by Jannik Sinner, including in the opening game of the set for the third time in a row.

Sinner meets a drop shot and puts away the forehand down the line.

“It’s not over,” yells someone from the crowd. It definitely is.

SECOND SET! Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-1 Alexander Bublik*

01:08 , Jamie Braidwood

51 minutes.

That’s all it took for Sinner to race to a 6-1 6-1 lead on Arthur Ashe. He seals it with an ace, too.

It’s been an awful hour for Bublik.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 6-1 5-1 Alexander Bublik

01:05 , Jamie Braidwood

There are groans as Bublik double faults again when facing break point. This is just tough to watch at this stage.

Sinner will come out to serve for a two-set lead well inside the hour-mark.

*Jannik Sinner 6-1 3-1 Alexander Bublik

01:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Bublik double-faults on 30-30 but saves the next break point to just about stay in touching distance. He grins at the applause he receives for holding serve and getting on the board in the second.

He’s still unable to do much to disrupt Sinner, who faced a tough test in the previous round against Denis Shapovalov.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 6-1 2-0 Alexander Bublik

Tuesday 2 September 2025 00:51 , Jamie Braidwood

Playing Sinner is hard enough without making three double faults and putting two drop shots into the net in the same game.

But that’s what Bublik has done as Sinner takes charge of the second set. Another rueful shake of the head from Bublik as he double faults on the third break point.

Jannik Sinner 6-1 1-0 Alexander Bublik*

Tuesday 2 September 2025 00:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Bublik goes from grinning at a Sinner backhand winner that flashes down the line to shaking his head as a forehand drifts long. The crowd are desperate to see more of a contest here.

FIRST SET! *Jannik Sinner 6-1 Alexander Bublik

Tuesday 2 September 2025 00:41 , Jamie Braidwood

Well, Bublik does try and mix it up, but with disastrous results. While 40-30 up, Bublik goes for back-to-back underarm serves, but puts the first wide and the second into the net.

You can’t do that against Sinner, who races to reach a poor drop shot from Bublik on set point and thrashes the backhand for a winner.

A 6-1 first set, in 23 minutes.

*Jannik Sinner 4-1 Alexander Bublik

Tuesday 2 September 2025 00:32 , Jamie Braidwood

Another forehand loops wayward from Bublik, who is unable to match the top-spin and weight of Sinner’s ball.

He does, though, find some huge serving to get on the board, to cheers from the Arthur Ashe crowd.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 3-0 Alexander Bublik

Tuesday 2 September 2025 00:26 , Jamie Braidwood

Another double fault from Bublik and then the forehand goes loose too and sails long.

It brings up break points and although he saves them both, Sinner locks in on the return to force another.

Bublik nets on the backhand and Sinner is cruising. Trying to go toe-to-toe from the baseline is going to do it, I don’t think.

Sinner continues to wear a compression sleeve on his right arm, which tonight is dark to go with his ‘night mode’ outfit.

Bublik, too, is wearing a compression sleeve, but on his left calf. Bublik has not started well.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 1-0 Alexander Bublik

Tuesday 2 September 2025 00:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Not the start Alexander Bublik wanted, after coming into this needing to be unpredictable and not erratic. The pressure from Sinner in the baseline rallies is immediate from the off, and a couple of unforced errors brings break point. Bublik double faults as Sinner gets the immediate advantage.

Monday 1 September 2025 23:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Sinner eventually came through, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, and the World No 1 said it was important to remember how difficult getting through at the grand slams can be.

“You cannot always go with the score line easy. Every match is so difficult. Every challenge is so difficult. Then there are players that have more qualities or potential, you know, and he's one of them.

“I was in a very difficult moment today. You know, the score line was a bit against me today, but, you know, I just tried to stay there mentally. Obviously very happy to manage to win today, because it was a very important win.”

Monday 1 September 2025 22:37 , Jamie Braidwood

Naomi Osaka said she felt grateful to be back on the big stage at the US Open and is not putting any pressure on herself to win the title after reaching the quarter-finals.

“What I want to take away from this tournament is just smiling and having fun,” Osaka said. “I know in my first round I was too nervous to smile, and my match against [Daria] Kasatkina was just really not smiley at all.

“Going into this match, I just wanted to be grateful. I have the most fun when I play against the best players. I love when they hit amazing shots or they hit aces, because you know, that's how they won the tournaments that they won.

“I think for me, you know, this is kind of unchartered territory at this point of my career. I'm just enjoying it. I'm having fun. I'm being able to play against the best players in the world.”

Coco Gauff 'excited for the future' after US Open exit

Monday 1 September 2025 22:19 , Jamie Braidwood

Coco Gauff said she is approach her US Open exit with perspective and is taking a long-term view as the two-time grand slam champion looks to improve her overall game.

“It's been a tough I think post-French Open for me for sure. I know the improvements that I need to make, and I feel like I'm making the right decision by making them. I wish I had more time between this tournament and Cincinnati, but that's the cards that I was given.

“I feel like I put so much pressure on myself at my age at 21, and I realise how much the girls on tour are being successful at 25, 26, at those ages. For me it just gets me excited to realise if I have four more years of just working as hard as I am right now and actually doing the right things, like where my game could be.

“It has obviously improved in the last four years from four years ago to now. So I think if I can make that same jump of improvement, it's a lot to be excited for the future for.”
