'Cocky' volunteer cop facing disciplinary action after incident while off-duty

A volunteer who is alleged to have left a member of the public confused over whether he was a “real police officer” after an incident on the road faces disciplinary action.

Dominic Taylor - a Special Constable based at Bridgwater - is accused of being “cocky” and officious towards the other driver when he was off duty and in his own car in August last year.

He allegedly failed to give “adequate explanation to them about what was going on, leaving the individual confused and concerned about whether or not SC Taylor was a real police officer”.

A notice for his misconduct hearing says he later gave "untruthful" accounts of the events on three separate occasions.

According to the College of Policing, the special constabulary is a force of trained volunteers who work with and support their local police. Once they have completed their training, they have the same powers as regular officers and wear a similar uniform.

SC Taylor is also accused of filing a false mileage claim, and claiming he was on two tours of duty when he was not.

If proved, his actions could amount to gross misconduct.

The hearing is due to be held at the Avon and Somerset Police HQ in Portishead on March 23 and 24.
