There is a lingering sense in the debut album from CocknBullKid that something offbeat and excitingly strange could have been conjured up by this talented singer from east London. Instead, the 23-year-old, whose real name is Anita Blay, has settled for a straight-down-the-line pop record that is solid and well-crafted but rarely thrilling. There are some kinks in the material. "Hold On to Your Misery", a very upbeat celebration of negative emotions, is pleasingly perverse. And "I Deserve It", the closing track, feels like a release of the bullish, cocky attitude that has hitherto been kept in reserve.
