Cochin University should support in creating knowledge society, says minister R Bindhu

KOCHI: The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) should be supporting the state government in creating a knowledge society in Kerala, said higher education minister R Bindhu. Presiding over the inauguration of the golden jubilee celebrations on Monday, Bindu said that Cusat was a leader in the higher education sector in Kerala and urged the alumni of the varsity across the world to contribute to the growth in various sectors in the state.

The year-long celebrations were inaugurated by industries minister P Rajeeve. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan was supposed to inaugurate the function virtually. However, the plan was changed in the last minute due to technical reasons.

Rajeeve said that modernization of knowledge creation was the main step towards ensuring a knowledge society and the varsity should march forward by analysing its growth and shortcomings in various sectors, which were envisaged at the time of its inception 50 years ago.

He said that the varsity must restructure its courses to meet the requirements of the contemporary society as Cusat could be an active contributor to the knowledge society envisaged by the government.

At the function, pro-VC P G Sankaran announced various projects to be implemented by the varsity as part of the jubilee celebrations. Those included the setting up centre for interdisciplinary studies and innovation, launch of industry academy conclavey.

Cusat will also conduct science and technology exhibition, national-level hackathon, lecture series by international experts, seminars and symposiums on emerging technologies.

The varsity also plans to set up a campus radio, a youtube channel and a dedicated art centre. Cusat will also focus on achieving the status of carbon neutral campus..
