Cocaine worth €500,000 and two handguns seized after chase through Dublin

Cocaine worth €500,000 and two handguns have been seized by gardai after a car collided with a wall attempting to flee a checkpoint in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Two men and a woman were arrested after they sped away from a checkpoint on the Phibsborough Road at around 4:30am.

Gardai gave chase in a managed containment operation before the car collided with a wall on Essex Quay.

One of the occupants of the car was seen throwing an item into the River Liffey - Dublin Live reports.

A garda spokeswoman said: "A search was conducted of the river with assistance from the Garda Water Unit and two handguns were recovered later today.

How does a trial work in Ireland?

"A search of the vehicle was conducted and 8kg of suspected cocaine, with an approximate street value of €500,000, and a small amount of suspected cannabis herb was seized. All drugs have been sent for analysis.

"The two men and one woman were arrested at the scene and are currently detained in Kevin Street, Kilmainham and Pearse Street Garda Stations respectfully, under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996."
