Cocaine, meth, allegedly found by police dogs at Hobart Airport

Two men have allegedly been caught trying to smuggle more than 260 grams of cocaine into Tasmania through Hobart airport, in a quantity police say is more than the total volume of the drug seized across the entire state last financial year.

Police allege a 36-year-old man from Redan in Victoria and a 26-year-old man from Mowbray in Tasmania had the drug hidden in their clothing.

The two men were also allegedly carrying almost half a kilo of methamphetamines.

The illegal drugs have an combined estimated street value of more than $250,000.

Police said both men were detected during "routine searches" involving the drug dog handling unit as they disembarked a flight direct from Sydney yesterday.

The Victorian man has been charged with trafficking in controlled drugs and obtaining an airline ticket under a false name.

The Tasmanian man has been charged with trafficking in controlled drugs.

Both are set to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court today.

Police said they are regularly screening passengers disembarking at all of Tasmania's airports.

"Tasmania Police would like to remind the community that, as a matter of course, their members regularly screen passengers disembarking at all of Tasmania's airports," they said in a statement.
