Cocaine-fuelled speeding motorist banned from driving fails to pull fast one on gardai

A cocaine-fuelled driver failed to pull the wool over the eyes of gardai after being clocked breaking the speed limit by 66km/h.

The motorist was stopped earlier this week after being detected travelling at 166km/h with three passengers on board near Adare, Co Limerick.

Gardai said the man behind the wheel "tried his luck" by handing them a foreign licence.

However, officers discovered he was banned from driving for the past two years thanks to the use of new garda technology.

The driver then tested positive for cocaine after an oral fluid test.

A garda spokesman said: "When stopped there was smoke coming from the back tyres due to the speed and manner of driving.

"The driver handed us a driving licence issued from outside the state.

"A check on our Mobility Device ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) showed that the vehicle was possibly used by a disqualified driver.

"Thankfully we are trialling some of the latest technology which allows us secure access to PULSE at the roadside.

"It appears the driver sometimes forgets to explain that he is disqualified and tries his luck with handing out a non Irish driving licence in the hope of evading detection.

"The driver was disqualified from driving for two years following a court conviction.

"We also administered a roadside Oral Fluid Test (drug test) which was positive for the presence of cocaine.

"The driver was arrested and processed at Henry Street Garda Station where a blood sample was provided."

Gardai added that the car was seized and the driver will be appearing before a district court soon.
