Cocaine-fuelled joyriders caught driving stolen car in Wicklow mountains

Thugs who were on a drug high were caught by Gardai joyriding in the mountains after stealing a car in Dublin.

The "geniuses" as described by Gardai "should have stayed at home" after coming across their COVID Measures Patrol in the Wicklow mountains on Saturday.

High on cocaine, the yobs decided to rob a car in the capital before joyriding the vehicle in the uplands, Dublin Live reports.

After being nabbed by officers, tests showed that they tested possible for cocaine and alcohol.

Gardai also confirmed that the stolen car had been returned to its grateful owner.

Following the words from Commissioner Drew Harris yesterday, a spokesman for Gardai warned criminals "we are not gone away from crime detection either."

Speaking about organised crime increasing during the lockdown, Commissioner Harris added: "We have still maintained our detective capability. We have been very deliberate in making sure that our OGC capability is still in place.

"They are using this situation to exploit it for their own purpose.

"People should be very wary of scams at this time for testing kits or cures."

In the short briefing yesterday morning, Commissioner Harris encouraged essential workers to carry ID with them while travelling.

He also added that fines and prosecutions were possible for anyone found breaking the regulations of the current lockdown.
