Cocaine and booze-fuelled former cage fighter faces life sentence after being found guilty of murdering ex-partner in 'prolonged' and 'remorseless' attack

A cocaine and booze-fuelled former cage fighter faces a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering his ex-partner.

Andrew Wadsworth, 37, stabbed 32-year-old Melissa Belshaw to death in a 'prolonged' and 'remorseless' attack at her home in Wigan.

Wadsworth was also convicted of attempting to murder a passerby on the street after the killing.

He was found not guilty of making threats to kill Ms Belshaw's 13-year-old daughter in the aftermath of her murder.

Now Wadsworth faces a life sentence.

A judge is set to address him in court tomorrow (Thursday).

During a two-week trial at Manchester Crown Court, jurors were told Ms Belshaw met Wadsworth and began a relationship after he was released from prison.

Prosecutors said the couple had a 'common interest in drink, drugs and sex' and their relationship was 'volatile'.

At trial, Wadsworth claimed that before he killed Ms Belshaw, he suffered a 'loss of control' following revelations about her sex life.

Wadsworth accused Ms Belshaw of being a 'prostitute' and of being involved in 'sexual encounters with numbers of people'.

Ms Belshaw admitted she had a 'sugar daddy', who she said was from Liverpool and gave her money.

He also claimed Ms Belshaw had facilitated an attack on him.

But jurors rejected his account and convicted him of murder.

The prosecution said Wadsworth was making the allegations to 'shift blame'.

Jurors were told they were 'no more than recycled accusations' which had already been raised months earlier.

Prosecutors said Wadsworth had a 'deep resentment' towards his former partner.

Wadsworth spent a few days at Ms Belshaw's home on Upholland Road in Wigan, before he stabbed her to death on the afternoon of May 20, fuelled by cocaine and alcohol.

Her daughter called 999 while Wadsworth remained in the house.

Jurors found him not guilty of making threats to kill Ms Belshaw's daughter.

A passing workman heard the 'distressed' child and used a hammer to smash a window, as she could not get out of the house.

Wadsworth emerged shortly after, with the workman describing him as looking 'deranged' and being a 'funny' colour.

Another man, a neighbour who had been out delivering a parcel, asked Wadsworth whether the people in the house were okay.

Shortly after, Wadsworth began pursuing him armed with a knife.

He repeatedly stabbed the man, and a jury has now found Wadsworth guilty of attempted murder.

The judge, Mrs Justice Yip, told Wadsworth, of Cranfield Road, Wigan, to expect a life sentence.
