Coca-Cola (Japan) Co. will introduce bottles made from 100% recycled materials for its iconic cola brand from the end of May.
The company decided to try bottles made from 100% recycled PET bottles for Coke after confirming their durability as carbonated beverage containers, which had been an existing concern.
Bottles made from 100% recycled materials will be used for 50% of the company's beverages in 2022, up from about 28% in 2020. The move is expected to reduce the use of new, oil-based plastics by about 30,000 tons a year.
In an attempt to further pare back the use of plastics, Coca-Cola will also begin selling products in containers without a label on a trial basis in some regions on May 31. Several beverages, including Coca-Cola and green tea Ayataka, will be available in a set of four bottles without a label, sold in paper cartons.
"We want to show how seriously we are engaged in recycling efforts by reducing plastic waste with our biggest brand," the company said.
