It’s been a plentiful year for Nirvana fans and Kurt Cobain obsessives. First, director Brett Morgen announced the release of music documentary Cobain: Montage of Heck, and its treasure trove of private archival material from Cobain’s life. Then, a teenager uncovered photographs of the first ever Nirvana gig, tucked away in a box in her father’s home in Washington state.
Now, Montage of Heck’s soundtrack – tipped to contain unheard Cobain demos and a somewhat unexpected comedy sketch – will be released on 6 November to coincide with the film’s DVD release, according to Deadline. The album is set to feature “audio montages that Kurt Cobain created”, according to Morgen, as well as a comedy skit for which Cobain voiced all the characters.
The soundtrack will feature all the music heard in the film, as well as demos – ranging from ragtime to thrash, apparently – recorded on to unmarked tapes.
“These are all just Kurt by himself with the guitar,” Morgen told Billboard. “These aren’t multi-track, finished songs or work-ups, but they’re extraordinary, and I think they provide a tremendous insight into his process. I think they further our understanding of Kurt, both as a musician and as a man.”
As previously reported, Morgen said the soundtrack is also due to include a “mind-blowing 12-minute acoustic unheard track”. So far, Universal Music Group haven’t released an official tracklisting for the album.
