Coatbridge soldier marks St Andrew's Day on overseas tour

A Coatbridge soldier has told how he will mark St Andrew’s Day with his colleagues while serving on his first overseas deployment.

Fusilier William Reid, of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, is on a six-month tour of Kabul where he and his fellow soldiers are part of a NATO training and mentoring mission.

The 19-year-old, a former pupil of St Ambrose High, will also be spending the festive season in Afghanistan before the troops return to their Penicuik base next spring.

He said: “I’ll mark St Andrew’s Day by wearing my Tam O’Shanter with pride and playing pipe music at full volume – and I’ll also be celebrating Scotland qualifying for the Euros!

“This year will be different as I am with my fellow Scottish colleges in Kabul on my first deployment overseas.

“I’m very proud to be serving my country overseas, especially at this time of year; and my family feel great pride in me being deployed overseas and doing my job.”
