Coatbridge's Vulcan pub set to close as Wetherspoons put bars up for sale

Coatbridge’s Vulcan pub is one of four Scottish bars being axed by popular chain Weatherspoons.

The Main Street boozer has been put up for sale but will continue to trade until new buyers are found.

Pub bosses have failed to confirm why the Vulcan is being put on the market alongside premises in the Borders and Caithness.

Weatherspoons made reported pre-tax profits of more than £50m for the six months to January 27 in its latest trading results.

The Vulcan is one of 16 of their pubs throughout the UK identified for closure, but it is unclear what will happen to the pubs if a buyer isn’t found.

They are likely to be rebranded with new names and menus if they are taken over.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of UK pubs has fallen by almost 25 per cent from 50,000 to 39,000 in the last 10 years.
