Coatbridge Rovers underline commitment to helping mental health issues

Coatbridge Rovers FC have shown their commitment to helping people's mental health after coaches of all nine teams and club officials passed an e-learning course.

In May, the Scottish Football Association, in association with Breathing Space, became the first of the home nations to create their own bespoke course, to help clubs understand the importance of mental health and learn how to deal with issues effectively.

The club also recognised that people in their community might be struggling with lockdown, isolation, quarantine and everything else connected to the coronavirus crisis, and have set up a service where, to date, they have collected and delivered 350 prescriptions from chemists to residents, organised 470 shopping deliveries, paid gas and electricity bills for 50 households and provided a 24/7 phone number with help and support for people looking for a friendly voice to talk to.

On Wednesday mornings, the club run a Walk and Talk group at Drumpellier Lochs, where anyone is welcome to go along, socially distanced, and join in.

There is also a mental health five-a-side session on Tuesday evenings, though this has been cancelled due to the Covid situation, and will be resumed as early as possible.

A Coatbridge Rovers statement issued after World Mental Health Day on Saturday, read: "At Coatbridge Rovers, children’s mental and physical well-being is at the foundations of our club ethos and we pride ourselves on ensuring all our players, officials and coaches are aware of their value at the club through positive affirmation, involvement and encouragement.

"We strive to create an inclusive, positive environment for all our players and key to our success is the enthusiasm and commitment of our coaches who interact with the players week after week."
