Coatbridge man asks for Hospice donations instead of presents for 60th birthday

For most people, their birthday is an opportunity to accept gifts from friends and loved ones.

But a hugely generous Coatbridge man chose to give something back to others during his special celebrations.

Kevin Melia put out an appeal to family, friends and his colleagues at the Morrisons store in Baillieston for donations for his 60th birthday.

The collection was in aid of St Andrew’s Hospice and a fantastic final total of £1000 raised for the Airdrie-based facility.

Kevin said: “This great amount was given to me as donations and I can’t thank everyone enough.

“Special mention goes to my Morrisons colleagues Catherine (Kit) Ritchie and Angela Queen for their support.”

As if that wasn’t enough, selfless Kevin also handed his birthday cake into Carnbroe care centre for the residents to “have for their tea”.
