Coatbridge ice-hockey kids raise hundreds of pounds for mental health charity

A Coatbridge-based ice hockey team got their skates on to raise hundreds of pounds for charity at a recent tournament.

Lanarkshire Lightning under-11s, who play at the Time Capsule, presented a cheque to the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH).

The club organised a tournament at Hamilton ice rink in memory of Thomas McGrotty, a close friend of the team’s coaches who sadly died earlier this year.

The boys raised £750 at the event during which they competed against North Ayr Sabres, Kilmarnock Youths and Murrayfield Juniors.

Delighted coach Chris McIntosh told the Advertiser afterwards: “We had a good turnout on the day and it was lots of good fun.

“It was our first invitational tournament and there was lots of smiling faces and good hockey being played.

“The main focus was raising money for SAMH, though, and we are really happy with the amount we’ve handed over.

“We had a bucket collection, an online donation site, raffles and tea and coffee on the day.

“We are hoping to make this an annual event now in memory of Thomas.”
