Coatbridge charity's "wave of light" to mark baby loss awareness week

Coatbridge charity Baby Loss Retreat is arranging special events to mark the annual week of commemoration for the annual baby loss awareness week.

Its founders have arranged to display banners in the town throughout the week, which begins this Friday, October 9 – and will culminate with a poignant “wave of light” ceremony, taking place at St Augustine’s Church.

The service on Thursday, October 15, is for all those who have lost a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death, and will be attended by 50 socially-distanced attendees with others able to follow the event live online.

Participants will be able to tie a ribbon onto the fence outside the church and light a candle inside, with the event already being booked to its full capacity.

The church itself has been illuminated this in pink and blue to mark the the awareness week; while Baby Loss Retreat founders Bryan and Julie Morrison have also lit up their Shawhead home with the colours.

Julie told the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser: “Wave of light is for everybody who has lost a baby; it’s a worldwide event where people will light a candle to remember.

“We can only have 50 in the church for this year’s service but it’s nice that we’re able to have it and bring people together.

“We’re also marking baby loss awareness week by having banners put up on bridge for people to see at Shawhead flyover and near Faraday retail park.”

Baby Loss Retreat provides support groups and vital therapeutic breaks for parents who have suffered the loss of their child.
