Coatbridge boxer Ricky Burns offered ring return in Latvia battle this September

Coatbridge boxer Ricky Burns has been offered a return to the ring later this year in Latvia, Lanarkshire Live Sport can reveal.

History-maker Burns, the first Scot to win world titles in three different divisions, lost his last outing to Lee Selby at the O2 Arena last October.

However, before the Covid-19 outbreak he had vowed to fight on into 2020 and the 37-year-old looks set to get his wish against Russian Eduard Troyanovsky.

Burns’ manager Alex Morrison has confirmed that the contract has been put to the Monklands’ fighter for a bout for the light-welterweight clash on September 26.

Morrison admits they are still considering the offer but at this stage “it looks like a goer.”

He said: “It’s an interesting offer for Ricky.

“He has been absolutely desperate to get back in the ring, and has been training hard since we’ve been allowed back n the gym.

“It should be a good test for him, if he does decide to take it. Indongo stopped him in the first round but he is a good fighter.

“The hope would be that if Ricky wins this he gets himself right back into the world picture.

“He’s in great shape still, but circumstances have just meant he couldn’t get a fight sorted. We want him right back getting the big fights again.”

One of Troyanovsky’s defeats came against Julius Indongo, who defeated Burns in front of his home crowd since 2017 when he lost the World Super Lightweight unification bout to Julius Indongo.

Morrison reckons this adds another interesting thread to the potential bout.

“Eduard looks like a tough opponent. He has only lost two fights, and one of those was to Julius Indongo, who Ricky has also lost to.

“They have that shared record against a fighter. They will both want to prove something.”
