Coastguard teams called out three times to rescue people swept away by tide at closed pier

Four people had to be rescued from the sea by Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare in a busy Bank Holiday weekend for the town's coastguard team.

The team was called to three separate incidents yesterday (Monday May 25).

It started at 4.53pm when coastguards were alerted to two people ‘cut off’ at the rear of Knightstone Island.

Fortunately the coastguard truck was out on patrol and quickly arrived on scene.

The people made their way back in, trudging through the mud with their dingy in tow and luckily they got back onto the beach okay.

Four people were also spotted way out on the tideline, also at Knightstone Island.

Due to the distance and an incoming tide, RNLI Weston was also brought in to help - they arrived and safely got the people on board the boat.

Straight after this incident, the team received a radio call about two people on Birnbeck Island who were taken away by the tide.

The inshore lifeboat was immediately tasked to their location and guided to pick them up.

Just as they were about to head for the station a third person was spotted in the water, who had gone in to help the first two.

The lifeboat was radioed to turn around and head to his location to pluck him out the water.

While all this was going on, a fourth person had entered the water to assist, and he was returned to safety.

Once they had everyone safely on board, the now slightly overloaded boat could return all the casualties to hard ground so they could be ferried to the rest of the team before the ambulances arrived on scene.

A spokesman for the coastguard team said: "All the teams worked very closely together to manage these dangerous situations whilst they all maintained social distancing at all times."
