Coastguard records highest number of call-outs since lockdown began as people 'ignore' stay-at-home advice

The Coastguard has recorded its highest daily number of call-outs since lockdown began, as people “ignore” the Government’s stay-at-home message.

A spokesman said there were 97 incidents altogether on Friday - the highest number since the restrictions were imposed. The average for April was 63.

Matt Leat, duty commander with the Coastguard, said Britons had been "tempted" to visit the coastline amid the warm weather, but that each call was putting responders at risk

He said: “People are ignoring the measures put into place by the Government.

“I completely understand that the weather and the bank holiday coupled with the fact that we’ve been in this lockdown situation for just over six weeks has tempted people out to our beautiful coasts. However, as the Government said only yesterday, it’s really vital that we all continue to observe the guidance."

He added: “Every time we get a 999 or distress call, we will always respond but the minute we send in a rescue response, we’re putting our frontline responders at risk as well as putting the NHS under avoidable pressure.

“Please, please continue to observe the #StayHomeSaveLives message – it’s still in place for a reason. Exercise locally and stretch your legs, not our resources.”

On Friday, parts of the country were hotter than Monaco and Corfu.

On Saturday, London and the south east of the country are forecast to be hotter than Ibiza and St Tropez with highs of around 26C.

Amid the sunshine, the Government issued reminders to obey social distancing rules and to stay at home.

As the hot weather coincides with Boris Johnson's latest update on the lockdown, Environment Secretary George Eustice said it is "of vital importance" that the public continue to stay at home.

Speaking at a Downing Street press conference on Friday, he said: “The Prime Minister will outline any changes to the guidance on Sunday.

“But in the meantime, in spite of the sunny bank holiday, it is vitally important that we continue to abide by the current restrictions.

"Stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives."
