Coastguard helicopter scrambled after man falls into water near Dovestone Reservoir

A man had to be winched to safety after falling into water near Dovestone Reservoir.

Shortly before lunchtime on Wednesday, June 16, Greater Manchester Police were alerted to a man who had fallen "a distance" into water in the Dovestone area.

Unfortunately, poor phone signal meant they were unable to tell exactly where he'd fallen, and the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team (OMRT) were called to help find him.

After driving around to check the most likely spots, the team found the man close to the waterfall in Birchen Clough.

A casualty carer rushed to the scene, who looked over the man and believed he might have suffered spinal injuries in the fall.

As his injuries had the potential to be so severe, the team scrambled air support, with a Coastguard helicopter launching from its Humberside base to winch the man to safety.

The man was treated and strapped up in a vacuum mattress on a stretcher from the OMRT, before the crew winched him into the aircraft.

He was then flown down to Greenfield Reservoir, where the helicopter landed and transfered the man to an ambulance so he could be taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the team said: "Huge thanks to the passers-by who administered immediate first aid and stayed with the casualty until help arrived, and also to Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team (MRT), who we contacted to assist with the helicopter landing site."

Eight members of the Holme Valley team, and 18 members of the Oldham MRT were involved with the rescue, which lasted around three hours and 40 minutes.
