Coastguard crews scramble to River Forth after ship gives off 'distress signal'

Coastguard teams were scrambled to carry out a search of the River Forth at Falkirk earlier, after a ship sounded a distress signal.

A helicopter was spotted searching an area of Forth Ports at Grangemouth, before scanning the water between Bo'ness and Blackness.

Rescue crews were also sent out in boat to look for the vessel, but nothing has been found.

Enquires into the incident are ongoing.

A spokesperson for the UK Coastguard said: "Shortly before midday today (9 July), HM Coastguard were alerted to the activation of a distress signal from an EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radio beacon) in the Falkirk area.

"South Queensferry and Kingshorn coastguard rescue teams, alongside the South Queensferry RNLI lifeboat and the search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick were sent to conduct a thorough search of the River Forth.

"No vessel was found to be in distress and the search has been terminated, pending further information."
