Coast Road crash: Witness claims one car 'looked crushed as it was taken away'

Two cars have crashed on the Coast Road , sparking traffic delays.

Passengers were seen sitting by the side with police as one vehicle was removed.

"The car being removed looked like it was half crushed at the back," claimed a witness.

"It seemed like a vehicle must have gone into the back of it and it looked pretty nasty.

"The police were by the side of the road, near the Churchill Street turn-off, as traffic moved slowly past them through the roadworks.

"It was slow moving but it was moving, but the people sitting down did look a bit shaken up."

The crash happened on Tuesday afternoon, according to Northumbria Police , who said the road has since reopened.

A force spokesperson said: "At around 1.11pm today [Tuesday] we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the westbound carriageway of the Coast Road.

"Officers and emergency services attended and it appeared two cars had collided near Churchill Street.

"No-one is believed to have sustained any serious injuries and both vehicles were recovered.

"One lane was partially blocked while emergency services were in attendance but has now reopened."
