Coast Road chaos as black ice causes four separate crashes, one involving an ambulance

An ambulance attending a series of crashes in North Tyneside was struck by another vehicle while at the scene.

Emergency services were called to the Coast Road shortly after 6am on Friday after black ice caused multiple collisions.

Four incidents in total were reported, with seven vehicles being involved in one collision.

Two other collisions involved three vehicles while the last crash involved four vehicles.

The road was closed in both directions between Silverlink and Billy Mill Roundabout to allow clean-up and for gritters to treat the road.

No-one was injured in any of the crashes and no-one had to be taken to hospital, the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said.

NEAS added an ambulance stopped at the scene while returning to the station and paramedics got out to help those involved when another vehicle crashed into it.

Again, no-one involved was injured but the damaged ambulance was taken away for repairs.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police confirmed that the road had to be closed for several hours, adding: “The roads are extremely icy so we would ask drivers to take extra care, drive slowly, and remain patient. Please avoid the area if you can."

The road was fully reopened by 9.40am.
