The Irish Coast Guard is warning swimmers intending to take a dip in the sea to celebrate the New Year to 'always be prepared' and to be aware of dangers while in the water.
It comes as Met Eireann has forecast a rainy New Year's Eve before weather conditions turn freezing once again, with a low pressure systems leading to “largely unsettled conditions." The Irish Coast Guard is also urging members of the public to check out weather conditions before their swim.
In a statement on social media, the Irish Coast Guard wrote: "Sea swimming is as popular as ever and many more take to the seas over Christmas & New Year, but the dangers have not decreased. We ask you to take one minute of your time to read the following safety advice."

Safety Tips
- Check weather, tides & water conditions.
- Our waters are cold year round, so be prepared for the water shock. Don’t panic, breath slowly & float on your back if in difficulty. You will float.
- Ensure your visible in the water, wear a bright coloured swim cap or use a tow float.
- Don’t ever swim alone, in a quiet area or at night.
The Irish Coast Guard said: "These simple messages could save you or someone’s life. Don’t take risks, always be prepared.
"Dial 112/999 if you someone in difficulty, don’t wait, every second counts," they added.
