Coast Guard issue warning to sailors after man slips while boarding yacht and gets stuck in water at Dun Laoghaire

Sailors are being reminded to ensure they have a system in place for self-recovery after a person slipped into the water while boarding their yacht in Dun Laoghaire.

The scary incident unfolded between the Royal Irish Yacht Club and Dun Laoghaire Marina when the person fell onto a fender on the side of the boat.

And the casualty was in the water for 15 minutes before Marina staff noticed he was in the water.

Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard responded to the call, and they are now warning the public to be careful after two incidents in less than a week.

Howth RNLI hailed as heroes after rescuing sailors from sinking ship off Dublin coast

They said: "112 Call for a person in the water between the Royal Irish Yacht Club and Dun Laoghaire Marina.

"The person was out of the water but may be needing assistance. Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard responded and was quickly updated by Marina management.

"The casualty slipped into the water when stepping aboard his yacht, he held onto a fender on the side of the boat for 15 minutes until Marina staff noticed him in the water.

"They quickly activated their emergency plan and in moments had him recovered from the water providing him with aftercare.

"Well done Dun Laoghaire Marina.

Coast Guard chief says he's happy with levels of training in Dublin but 'issues' still remain

"This is the second solo MOB we have experienced it the last 4 days.

"This reminds us to consider when boating SOLO!

"What system have you in place for self-recovery?

"Your marina has lots of ladders but can you remember where they are? (when you’re in the water)."
