Coast Guard helicopter to the rescue after person cut off by tide on Sandymount beach

The Irish Coast Guard helicopter swooped to the rescue this afternoon after a person got into difficulty on Sandymount beach.

Rescue 116 was already airborne on a previous mission on a busy New Year's Day when the call came in to say a person had been cut off by the tide on the south Dublin beach.

The helicopter landed and took the casualty to safety, handing them over to the Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard team.

The Coast Guard said: "Dublin Coast Guard received a call from Dublin Port Pilot boat of possible persons cut off by tide on Sandymount beach.

"Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard and Rescue 116, which was already airborne on a previous mission, were tasked to investigate.

"Rescue 116 identified that one person was cut off by the tide, they landed, recovered the casualty and transported them inland where they were handed over to the Dun Laoghaire team.

"Remember if you see a person in difficulty on or near water, call the Coast Guard on 112 / 999."
