Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 takes sick patient from cruise liner in Irish Sea

A helicopter made a dramatic rescue of a sick man off a cruise liner steaming in the Irish Sea.

The rescue involved Dublin-based Rescue 116, who were sent to the scene after a passenger on board the Celebrity Reflection ship took ill.

The vessel had left Dublin a short time earlier and was making its way towards Norway at 8pm on Sunday night.

The ship contacted Belfast Coastguard and sought assistance from a rescue helicopter.

The Northern Ireland authorities then contacted the Dublin based rescue crew who flew immediately to the liner.

Sources told the Irish Mirror that medics on board the vessel stabilised the patient, who had suffered a suspected heart attack, before the arrival of the helicopter off Carlingford.

He was winched off the ship by a winchman and flown the short distance to Drogheda where he was receiving treatment at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

The Fire Service and Drogheda Coastguard were also involved in the operation and secured a landing area for the giant Sikorsky helicopter.
