Coalition takes control of Broxtowe - but by-election could tip balance

A broad coalition has taken control of Broxtowe Borough Council, which was formerly controlled by the Conservatives.

No party won an overall majority in the local elections, but the Conservatives were the largest party.

Now, Labour and the Liberal Democrats have joined forces with independent councillors to form a coalition.

It means Labour’s Milan Radulovic is the leader of the council, and the Liberal Democrats’ Steve Carr is the deputy leader.

But a planned by-election for two new councillors in Stapleford South East on Thursday, June 13, could affect the political balance of the council.

In 2015 - the last election in the ward - both seats were won by the Conservatives.

Currently, Labour has 14 seats, the Liberal Democrats have five, there are two independents, and one Ashfield Independent councillor. This means the coalition has 22 seats.

The Conservatives currently have 20 seats, ahead of next month’s by election.

If the Conservatives were to hold both seats in the by-election, they would have the same number of seats as the current coalition.

A spokesman for Broxtowe Borough Council said: “At the annual council meeting on May 15, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE (Labour) was confirmed as leader of the council with Councillor Steve Carr (Liberal Democrat) as deputy leader.

“A by-election in Stapleford South East will be held on Thursday, June 13, for the final two elected members for the council.”
