Coalition support falls in latest Newspoll

Labor has maintained a winning position in the latest Newspoll which found coalition support at its lowest level since before the last federal election.

Figures published in The Australian show the opposition has a 54 to 46 per cent lead on a two-party preferred basis.

The coalition's primary vote fell three points to 36 per cent, while support for Labor increased one point to 40 per cent.

The poll was conducted with more than half of Australia's population in lockdown and record numbers of coronavirus cases fuelled by the NSW outbreak.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said he wouldn't commentate on polls but pointed to Resolve research which last week put the coalition's primary vote at 40 per cent.

"There's no doubt, though, that people being in lockdown in our two major states is having an impact on how people are feeling about not just the governments, but about their livelihoods," he told the Seven Network.

"That is why it is so important to give those people hope."

Senior Labor frontbencher Penny Wong said she was more interested in presenting a credible alternative at the next election than polls.

"What we also have to do is hold the prime minister to account and there's a lot to hold him to account for," she told the ABC.

"This is a bloke who is more interested in picking a fight with the premiers than he is about leading the country safely out of lockdown."

Scott Morrison remains preferred prime minister over Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese.

Mr Morrison lifted one point to 50 per cent ahead of Mr Albanese on 34 per cent, a drop of two points.

Primary votes for the Greens and One Nation are at the same level as the 2019 election at 10 and three per cent respectively.
