Coalisland parking restrictions to be introduced

New parking restrictions are to be introduced in Coalisland as a result of legislation being introduced by the Department for Infrastructure.

The new restrictions will see parts of the town subject to two-hour maximum stays from Monday to Saturday.

The plans will also see the introduction of two loading bays on Main Street, as well as ‘no waiting at any time’ restrictions.

The move comes as a public consultation begins on the new parking restrictions, which were approved by Mid Ulster District Council last year following the completion of the Co Tyrone town’s public realm scheme.

The map below from the Department shows the areas of Main Street, Barrack Street, the Square and Stewartstown Road which will be affected by the changes.

While the legislation introduced by the Department says the restrictions will be brought into force in 2023 a spokesperson said no specific date has been decided for when they will begin.

“The timeframe for the legislation to be made will be dependent on a number of factors, including the number and content of representations made during the consultation period,” the spokesperson said.

A row erupted between local representatives in the area last year after DUP councillor Clement Cuthbertson’s comments referring to Coalisland as ‘the wild west’ were described as ‘wholly inappropriate’.

There have been claims that no parking tickets have been issued in the town for more than a decade, despite thousands having been issued in other towns in Mid Ulster during the same period.
