Twenty one miners have been killed after the roof of a mine collapsed in northern China.

The disaster occurred on Saturday in Shenmu, Shaanxi province, according to state media.

In a statement, the city government said that sixty six other miners were rescued from the Lijiagou coal mine.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

The number of fatalities reported in cave-ins, explosions and other disasters in Chinese coal mines has fallen sharply over the past decade, however the industry is still the world’s deadliest.

In a statement last January, China’s National Coal Mine Safety Administration said the “situation of coal mine safety production is still grim” despite improvements.
