Coaches ransacked and looted sparking tourism fears and council complaints

Coaches bringing hundreds of tourists are being ransacked - prompting operators to criticise Liverpool City Council.

These shocking images show how a number of coaches were vandalised, stolen from and even left to roll into other vehicles while based temporarily at the Adelphi Hotel car park last month.

Tourism workers say this is becoming a regular occurrence and have complained that there is a lack of safe space for coaches to park overnight in the city - after a facility at Kings Dock was closed.

That coach park was closed following th ECHO arena car park fire at the end of 2017 - and since then coaches have had to use temporary arragements.

One of these is a temporary space at Riverside Drive - where the council is in the process of creating a new, £3m coach park as part of the wide-ranging city centre connectivity scheme.

But drivers and tourism workers say they have been forced to make other arrangements - leaving their vehicles vulnerable to attacks.

This includes a number being broken into, looted and forced into other vehicles while parked overnight at the Adelphi Hotel Car Park.

These images were taken after large-scale damage was done in the car park on April 17.

One of the drivers whose coach was damaged is Dominic Vigni.

He explained: "On the 17th April, four coaches were attacked, some more than others, all had windows broken, lockers forced open, lights turned on and handbrakes released.

"From mine they stole a digital tachograph card, Sat Nav and a ukelele. The coach had one large window broken, all cubby holes emptied and damaged to the bodywork."

He said he was forced to pay nearly £400 from his own pocket after the incident.

Dominic, like other drivers and tourism workers, has expressed frustration with the Adelphi - claiming staff were not helpful or supportive after they had paid to be parked there.

But they are also frustrated with the council - arguing that not enough is being done to offer coach drivers a safe place to park as they bring tourists - and subsequently money - to the city.

He said: "Liverpool seems to be following a growing trend in cities that just don't want coaches to come, but if we don't come what happens to your tourist industry?

"I thing the city council have become complacent and need a shake up to resolve this situation, or face coaches just not staying in Liverpool any more."

A tourism worker who operates in the city - but asked not to be named - said several operators have told him they will not be sending coaches to Liverpool any more because of the issues they are facing.

For its part, the council has accepted that the current situation for coaches is not ideal - but pointed out that this is largely down to the unforeseen circumstances of the Echo Arena car park fire.

A spokesman said: "We have put temporary arrangements in place at Riverside Drive and are liaising regularly with coach companies about this.

"We are creating a new coach park in Riverside Drive as part of the city centre connectivity scheme."

The ECHO has attempted to contact Brittannia Hotels, which owns the Adelphi, over the issues raised.
