Coachella 'could be cancelled' after coronavirus case confirmed near festival site

The fate of Coachella Festival is uncertain after a case of coronavirus was confirmed near the site in Riverside County, California.

Public health officer Dr Cameron Kaiser made the announcement on Sunday (8 March) after a patient who was considered a “presumptive positive for coronavirus” was tested by the Health Office.

The hospital the patient is being tested at, Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, is just 25 minutes away from the city of Indio, where Coachella is based.

Kaiser says at this time no decisions have been made on the future of public events and that he will continue to evaluate on a case-by-case basis.

Public officials are currently working to see whether the individual had been in contact with any others who might have also been exposed.

Riverside follows Orange and Los Angeles counties in declaring a state of public emergency.

Coachella has already confirmed headliners such as Travis Scott, Rage Against the Machine and Frank Ocean

Just last week SXSW festival was axed due to coronavirus fears.

Glastonbury organisers are yet to confirm whether or not the festival will go ahead.
