Coach sacked after Asian Games football failure

The Football Association of Thailand parted ways with U23 coach Worrawoot Srimaka Tuesday following his team's first-round exit at the Asian Games in Indonesia, association president Somyot Poompunmuang said.

The Thais were eliminated in the group stage at Jakarta Palembang 2018 last week after 1-1 draws with Qatar and Bangladesh and a 1-0 loss to Uzbekistan.

According to Somyot, Worrawoot, 46, met him on Friday and asked him to allow him to remain as coach of the U23 national team.

"I thought he should end his role," he said.

"I gave him the chance to work with a free hand without intervention. But he could not get good results, so we could not trust him any more. He understood this and we parted company by mutual consent."
