Coach reveals the key factor in Adelaide's AFL rise

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks reckons it's all about trust.

"That's where we've found ourselves: we just have complete trust in each other," Nicks said after Adelaide's stirring 14-point win over Hawthorn.

"It's a position that every sporting club wants to get into - and it's hard to stay there.

"We're doing whatever we can to try and stay there."

The Crows took top spot on the ladder after steamrolling the Hawks with six goals to two in the final quarter of Friday night's clash.

Adelaide's 15.11 (101) to 13.9 (87) victory was remarkable given the Crows overturned a 32-point deficit late in the first quarter.

"We trust our playing group completely, because it has been years of work," Nicks said.

"They trust us (coaches) and so in that moment, there's no need for yelling and screaming.

"You go back three or four years, you'll probably find me yelling and screaming at that quarter-time break.

"That's me not necessarily trusting that we're all on the same page - and maybe then, we weren't.

"It took us time to get to that and show that maturity. But tonight, it was calm."

The Crows amassed 6.6 to nothing in the second term before the Hawks fought back to take an eight-point lead at three quarter-time.

Again, Nicks trusted his players to turn around their fortunes - and they did.

"It's a trust in the group, in that when it's my turn, the group trusts me, I trust myself," he said.

"Because possession-wise, we didn't have anyone over 30. And this has been consistent for us, it has been just across the board -  everyone contributes."
