Coach K on why the Pelicans shouldn’t have played Zion Williamson in the Summer League

ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg argued this week that Zion Williamson is “out of shape” and “significantly overweight” after he played just nine minutes in his Summer League debut. Williamson left his debut game early, and has been ruled out for the rest of summer in Las Vegas with a bone bruise in his left knee. The Pelicans say that Williamson is not seriously hurt and that keeping him off the floor is merely a precaution.

According to Williamson’s former coach, Duke legend Mike Krzyzewski, the No. 1 overall pick shouldn’t have been on the floor at all. Coach K told Adam Zagoria that he felt Williamson wasn’t ready to play physically or mentally, given his whirlwind few weeks since the draft.

Via Forbes:

“No, I thought really he never should’ve played just because he’s been on this circuit of awards, the ESPYs, everything. I don’t think he’s in the playing shape or the mental shape to play.”

Fans will now have to wait until October to see Williamson face NBA competition when the preseason begins.
