Coach explains Hearts exit for Hamilton as he admits surprise over Accies assistant manager call

John Rankin believes Hamilton can offer him the chance to take the next step in his coaching career after leaving Hearts.

The 38-year-old former Dundee United midfielder has left his role as the Jambos' U18s boss to become Accies' new number two.

New Douglas Park head coach Stuart Taylor has been looking for a new assistant after Guillaume Beuzelin's exit last month.

Rankin - a former teammate of Taylor's at Ross County - was 'surprised' to hear from his former teammate but believes his experience as Hearts U18s head coach could prove useful.

He told Accies TV : "I'm delighted to be here. I spoke to Stuart on Tuesday night after Hearts gave me permission to speak to the club. I was impressed by his ideas.

"It's took a few days to transpire but I am delighted to be here and hopefully I'll help this team progress.

"I've known Stuart for years as we played together at Ross County.

"When he called, I was a bit surprised to speak with him.

"Having had my background working with the kids at Hearts, I think it will be a good blend.

"And it's good for me to take the next step in my career by working with senior players."
