Co Tyrone school delivers stark warning to pupils over quarry swimming

A Co Tyrone school has told its pupils the last thing they want to be doing is "organising a guard of honour" if they drown in a local quarry.

St Joseph's in Coalisland issued the stark warning after reports of young people swimming in water at the town's old clay pits.

The area had been earmarked for a motocross track and watersports lake, but the plans are currently on hold.

They posted on Facebook as June got off to a hot start, saying: "A message for our young people from St Joseph’s as well as local GAA Clubs and youth organisations:

"We get it, that you have all been in lockdown for 10 weeks. And we applaud you all for the manner in which you all conducted yourselves.

"We get it that water, sun and your friends are a major attraction.

"However! Swimming at the quarry at the clay pits is simply not safe.

"We want more than any of you to be able to provide an alternative. We want to be able to be organising safe alternatives, however we are restricted by Government guidelines.

"The last thing we want to be doing is organising a guard of honour for a great lad or great girl who had so much to offer!

"Quarries are not safe."

Police also issued a warning after a boy dislocated his shoulder while quarry swimming in Armagh, Craigavon and Banbridge district during recent warm weather.

Their post on Facebook read: "We have already posted today about how dangerous quarries are. We have since had more reports of young people playing in quarries across the district this afternoon. On one occasion a young male was lucky to walk away with no more than a dislocated shoulder.

"Parents, friends, family- please please educate young people about the dangers! We really don’t want to be dealing with a serious incident!"
