Co-op to close Bristol store to make way for new purpose-built supermarket

Co-op is to close one of its popular Bristol supermarkets to make way for a brand new store.

The Manchester-based retailer has applied to Bristol City Council for a new premises licence for the car park and former car wash next to the Co-op currently located at 335 Gloucester Road.

It would mean the existing store would be shut and replaced by a brand new purpose-built one on the land next to it.

A spokesperson for Co-op said: “There are proposals for the development of a brand new, purpose-built, Co-op food store, which would represent a significant investment to transform the shopping experience and better serve the local community.”

The existing Co-op store earmarked for closure is adjacent to the site where the controversial new Wetherspoons pub is due to be built.

Wetherspoons was granted planning permission at the end of 2021 to transform the building - also a former Co-op, which has been boarded up for more than a decade.

The controversial £2m development received hundreds of objections and six planning applications by JD Wetherspoon were rejected or withdrawn.

Plans for the Wetherspoons development include a complete refurbishment of the building and two small extensions including a roof terrace for a capacity of 130 people.
