Staff at a Co-op store in Newcastle city centre are facing redundancy after the shop's closure was confirmed.
The retailer says the branch on Market Street will close its doors to customers next month.
The last day of trading will be March 20 and signs have been put up at the shop informing people of the decision.
As a result, 15 members of staff are at risk of losing their jobs, though Co-op says efforts are being made to relocate those affected or to find them other roles.
A spokesperson said: "The Co-op is moving forward with a clear purpose and momentum and while this often involves opening new stores, we also have to take difficult decisions.
"We can confirm that our store on Market Street in Newcastle will close this March. Regrettably, staff at the store are at risk of redundancy.
"Every effort is being made to help them find alternative employment either at other local Co-op stores or elsewhere. The decision to sell the store is in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment of colleagues, who have been informed.
"We would like to thank our shoppers for their valued custom over the years.”
At this stage, the store has not been sold to another food retailer. And no new plans for other shop closures have been announced in the region by Co-op.
