Co-op staff assaulted after hurrying delivery driver who was running late

A shop delivery driver who repeatedly pummelled a store manager has been jailed.

Vincent Waugh had arrived to deliver goods to the Coop in Marksbury, Bristol Crown Court heard.

When he took a phone call - saying a pal had died - the delivery was delayed.

And when shop staff tried to hurry him along Waugh attacked manager Hasan Imam and assistant manager Aateka Allaf, the court was told.

Initially Waugh, 56, of Stokes Croft, denied wrongdoing and faced a trial.

But on day two he pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on Mr Imam and common assault on Ms Allaf.

He also admitted damaging Ms Allaf's mobile phone.

Judge Euan Ambrose jailed him for 12 months.

He told Waugh: "This was a shocking attack on a man who was doing his job."

Rupert Russell, prosecuting, said Mr Imam suffered bruising to his forehead, swelling to his nose and lip and had since been medicated for panic attacks and anxiety.

The court heard Waugh had previous convictions for an assault on police, an assault on an ex-partner and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Ian Morrell, defending, said his client had received bad news about his friend, which he took emotionally, and he "flipped" when urged to make the time-crucial delivery.

Mr Morrell told the court remorseful Waugh was now a "totally different" man who was intelligent and a valued employee working as a night truck driver.

The court heard Waugh had suffered a difficult early life in which he had suffered abuse and had felt he had been a victim.
