Co-op says new Conwy store for eyesore site could open next year

Co-op says it will invest £600,000 and create 20 jobs if planning is secured for a new store in Conwy.

The land in the shadow of Conwy castle was home to Billington's Garage but it closed in 2007 and was demolished five years later.  It has stayed empty since then and remains an eyesore in the area.

Now Co-op says it can breathe new life into the site - which they say could open as soon as next year if planning is secured.

Plans have been submitted on their behalf by Cadnant Planning and Matthew Jones Architects.

John Hillman, Co-op acquisition manager, Wales, said:   “The development presents an opportunity to breathe new life into a site which is described locally as an ‘eyesore’.

"Importance has also been attached to creating plans designed specifically to protect views of the Castle. Subject to planning consent and approval the store would open in late 2020, or possibly early the following year.

"It would improve the appearance of the site while serving the community, and visitors to the area, with quality foods - including hundreds of products sourced in Wales such as local beers, dairy, fresh produce, preserves and bakery, plus, Welsh lamb all year round.

“Co-op continues to look for new sites which support our ambition to operate at the heart of local life, and enable Co-op to give back and create social value in our communities.”
